What does a session look like?
Somatic Psychotherapy is a body-oriented counseling approach that highlights the importance of the body in both guiding the session and serving as a therapeutic tool. Engaging with our bodies can provide a more concrete and actionable way to develop mental health skills and achieve therapeutic goals.
Sessions primarily involve dialogue while incorporating body awareness, allowing the body to sometimes take the lead. Various techniques, such as muscle and connective tissue release, gentle muscle activation exercises, stretches, and body awareness activities, contribute to the effectiveness of the counseling experience.
Each session lasts one hour and can be offered as a full Somatic Psychotherapy session or as a split appointment—30 minutes Somatic Psychotherapy followed by 30 minutes of Massage Therapy. The receipts for a split appointment will reflect the back-to-back 30-minute appointments, each clearly designated.
Split appointments are ideal for clients seeking relief with the physical symptoms that are often associated with stress and distress. Examples include headaches and muscle tightness, weakness, and/or spasm. Internal symptoms such as digestion upset, heart symptoms, general pain and tightness. These symptoms can sometimes be described as emotional pain, or psycho-somatic, and they are approached with respect and understanding.
